The double and semi-double flowers vary in colour from crimson to dark red, from pink to orange and of course shades of yellow. The strong peppery tasting leaves and particularly the flowers are used in salads. Sow in the garden along wire mesh or a trellis. Can also be used as ground cover, and grown in larger boxes as a hanging plant. Very little or no fertilisation. The fresh harvested seeds are sometimes preserved as capers.
