Aubergine - a tropical sun lover

Aubergine (Eggplant) is a tropical beauty and a real sun lover. It's a fruit best known for its shiny dark purple skin. As a fruit vegetable, the Aubergine is gaining popularity in kitchen gardens. Aubergines are not only real eye-catchers in the garden, but are also delicious to eat. Aubergines are tasty and easy to digest and its mild flavour can be used in numerous dishes.

Aubergine - full of colour

You can sow Aubergine seeds from mid-February and harvest them around the end of August, when the Aubergine fruits have reached their final colour. Aubergines are a real Mediterranean delicacy whether baked, grilled or stewed. Aubergines, also called eggplants, can grow up to 1.5 metre high shrubs with large, rough, hairy, gray-green leaves.

The star-shaped flowers are mauve-coloured and have a yellow heart. Warmth is important when growing Aubergines so besides a sunny, sheltered spot in the garden, Aubergine plants also grow well in pots or boxes in the conservatory.
